@3 months agoEvery morning in Africa, a small gazelle wakes up. Her father tells her: “As soon as you are awake, you must be on your toes and run really fast, faster than the slowest gazelle, or you will be eaten!” And, every morning a young lion wakes up. His mother tells him: “As soon as you are awake, you must be on your toes and run fast, faster than the slowest gazelle, or you will starve!” The moral of the story … It doesn’t matter whether you are a gazelle or a lion, you better run really fast.
@3 months agoHistorians appear torn between their understanding that it is not possible to uncover past reality and academic discipline in doing historical research. Does this render historical research purposeless if we must we accept that any attempts to look back are subjective? What seems clear is that whatever conclusion we draw is our own, very personal interpretation of the past. Historical evidence may promote the confluence of interpretations and possible a consensus. However, a consenus does not prove that an interpretation is true. It remains a myth. And yet, a myth can turn into reality once we use it to make decisions.
@3 months agoAt the beginning of 1999 I had the priviledge of travelling to Niger and more specifically to Agadez and through the Aïr Mountain Range and the Ténére. I remember that even then, we were amongst a very small number of tourists who entered Niger. The trip had been organised by a local tour operator run by touareq. I have rarely felt as welcome in a foreign cultural environment. And, at no time did we feel uncomfortable. As I returned to Europe, I resolved to expose my children to this hospitality when they are old enough.
Less than ten years on, in 2007, I read on the tour operator’s website that trips to the Aïr Massif and the Ténére were no longer permitted. European foreign offices have issued qualified travel warnings to the South Sahara and Sahel. Now, in 2013, a return to normality seems more distant than ever. I fear that I will have to find a different destination for my children.
